The Society of Decorative Painters
Convention/Show
Fun? How about dancing in the
aisles?
by Shea Szachara and CLN (June 19, 2006)
The Society of Decorative Painters held its 34th annual
convention in Nashville earlier this month. Once again the quality
of the painting and teaching was only outdone by the enthusiasm of
the attendees.
Numbers. The convention included more than 200 classes and
more than 1,500 SDP members attended. With walk-in traffic the total
crowd was estimated at 3,000. The hotel room block was sold out, so
no hotel penalties needed to be paid – unlike the last four years.
There are now 315 local SDP chapters.
Elections. Officers were elected for the year 2006-2007:
Darla Foreman, President; Jill Fitzhenry, President Elect; Linda
Biedermann, Secretary; Jo Lutness, Treasurer; and Ann Johnson, Past
President ... At-large board members: Sheila Rouse, Barbara Jenkins,
Judy Westegaard, Lina Hoffman Ferrara, Cheri Rol, and Doxie Keller
... The nominating committee is Ann Kingslan, Shirley Nan Ruchong,
and Susan Vivoli.
New Programs. Treasure Boxes are painted boxes filled
with creative products that eventually be presented to sick children
in all 22 Shriner hospitals in the U.S. The Shriners band from
Nashville played prior to the annual meeting and there was dancing
in the aisles!
The other new program, Chapter Market Place, featured
various chapters selling hand-painted gifts, cards, etc. The price
of entry was a donation for breast cancer research and more than
$2,500 was raised.
DAC. The Decorative Arts Collection had a three-booth display
that included outstanding examples from its museum in Wichita, a
display of entries from its annual juried competition known as the
DAC Awards, and a sales area of consignment pieces from leading
decorative artists. Four winners share in the $3,000
business-sponsored prize money and the winning entries become part
of the museum's permanent collection.
